The Sinner

THE SINNER

What do I see that has not been seen?

What do I whisper that has not been whispered?

I strive in vain to decipher God’s vision.

I secretly seek salvation, yet I publicly pursue perdition.

I struggle with good and evil.

I play my role.

I lose hope, get it back, toss it in the air,

watch it fall.

I have returned to the temple empty-handed.

I have watched the fisherman cast his net.

I have failed to answer the simplest questions.

What is that sound floating in the water?

What is that void beckoning me beyond the trees?

What is that dream of dreams but a path to oblivion?

I surrender to the fruit of thy tomb.

An English Poem: Traducción de Armando Añel

silencio imperturbable.

An English Poem by Ernesto González

SILENCE WITHOUT FIRE

And God spoke and man listened,

Poor creature, soulless thing, hand without motion,

Words with no meaning, fear in the night,

Silence without fire, wolves lurking in the forest.

I wish I had been there and had seen it all.

I wish I had seen that first light

That descended upon man’s despair.

I wish I had witnessed the beginning of meaning,

the root of all evil, the root of all good.

Faith and flesh, bones and blood,

Flesh and faith, bones and blood.

Oh, God, this burden shall be lifted.

The echo will travel far-decadence and invisibility,

Death and desire, sacrifice and evasion.

Flesh and faith, bones and blood.

Fire without silence, God,

Silence without fire.
